New map solution for infrastructure projects

By: Isabell Bonna Aass

In any infrastructure project, precise location is everything. Yet uncertainty about where something occurs is often the starting point of an error that leads to delays or even legal disputes. But with the new map in Interaxo, everyone involved gets a shared overview of what is happening where – directly linked to registrations, processes and documentation.

Interaxo's new map

Simply knowing what to do won’t cut it in an infrastructure project. You need to know exactly where to do it. Which culvert? Which lane? Which post?

Uncertainty surrounding location is often the beginning of mistakes that cause delays, increased costs or even legal disputes. But with the new map in Interaxo, everyone involved in the project – including building owners, project managers, site managers and inspectors – share one common geographical overview. Registrations are located directly on the map, with GPS coordinates and address automatically attached to each registration.

The map solution in Interaxo

How to use the map in your infrastructure project

The map is a valuable site tool as it simplifies:

  • Navigating: Use GPS to centre the map on your current location. Look up the address and navigate to the exact correct place. And if you want to quickly check a distance, the measurement tool allows you to draw a line that measures real distance directly on the map.
  • Placing: Tap the location where you want to register a site observation. The address and coordinates are automatically attached to the registration, along with a map image showing the exact position. The location remains easy to trace in lists, searches, filters and follow-ups afterwards.
  • Locating: Use the map to filter registrations by site, stretch or area for easier follow-up.

Clients, engineers, contractors and inspectors all cover different parts of the project, but now, everyone uses same map. Cross-disciplinary collaboration should be based on live up-to-date data – not yesterday’s PDF export. Interaxo’s map solution makes that possible.

The GPS coordinates eliminate ambiguity when it comes to location; drainage, lighting, road signs, fences and other field elements all exist in specific places. Even if they aren’t included in the BIM model. Now, they are a part of the project archive – and the project record covers the entire site, not just the modelled parts.

Location: Gathering models and maps under the same roof

The new map is a part of Location – the new umbrella bringing the BIM model and map together in a single view. Whether you’re working on a building with a detailed IFC model, or a road project where large parts of the site never make it into a model, Location in Interaxo offers a space for all documentation that actually surrounds the site – placing it on its correct position on the map.

Centering your view on the map

Offline is not an exception; it’s a prerequisite

Whether you’re an inspector in a tunnel or a site manager on a remote road, many of your most important tasks are carried out without internet connection. That is why the Interaxo Capture app is built around that reality. Maps, registrations and documentation work as usual, even when you’re offline, and will automatically sync up once the device is back online.

FAQs

  • Can we upload our own GIS files?
GIS files currently live as documents in Interaxo. The map gives you a live base map with the project’s registrations on top.

  • Is the map just a widget or is it built into Interaxo?
The map is fully integrated with Interaxo. Registrations, processes, searches and access rights are carried through the entire workflow.

  • Where does the map data come from?
OpenStreetMap contributors cover the entire world. For Norway, open map data from the Norwegian Mapping Authority is also used.

  • Better infrastructure projects with IFC 4.3 support

IFC 4.3 is the latest version of the IFC standard and is specifically developed for infrastructure projects such as roads, railways, bridges, and ports. With support for IFC 4.3, Interaxo is now even better suited for these types of projects – offering faster handling of large models and easier access to critical project information.

  • Increase productivity with co-editing

Interaxo Project now supports collaboration in Microsoft 365 files – making document editing in construction projects much more efficient and secure . By enabling co-editing, the entire team can produce, edit and proofread content in the same document simultaneously, without disrupting or overwriting each other's work. You also get a clear overview of who is active in the document, as well as what changes are being made, in real time.
